From the Managing Principal
I spent years advising private equity firms and their portfolio companies while working in top strategy and technology practices. I spent a lot of time in boardrooms. I created many presentations. And I noticed a pattern that repeated itself too often.
A firm would acquire another company with a credible plan for creating value. They would hire advisors, start workstreams, and set 100-day goals. The strategy would be clear. The technology roadmap would be up to date. Then, somewhere between the investment committee presentation and the first operational review, the plan would start to drift.
Not because the strategy was flawed. But because no one had built the connective tissue between the investment objectives, the operational realities on the ground, and the technology decisions being made in parallel. Each workstream worked hard, but they were not communicating effectively, and no one was bridging the gaps.
I witnessed this phenomenon at a $300M carve-out, where both the sellers’ team and the buyer’s team were doing their job. Separation was driving towards clean exit. Integration was focused on quick start. The only issue was, that they used identical words to represent different realities, such as “migration complete”, “system ready” and “data transferred”. When those definitions finally collided weeks before cutover, the rework was expensive and no one had seen it coming. The teams did not fail. The alignment did.
That experience, more than any other, is why I founded Strategy MA. I didn’t want to create just another advisory firm with a method. I aimed to be the thought partner who connects strategy, operations, and technology, ensuring that the entire plan works well for the business, the people involved, and the investors relying on it.
